If there is one myth in business, it’s that the customer is king. Sure, they are essential to the cause but they aren’t the only ones. Without the right team by your side, nothing will get accomplished. Tasks will sit idly on the desk and the company will slide into freefall. In short, employees are as vital, if not more so than shoppers.
Turnover is something which happens yet you don’t want it to get out of hand. When the best workers start to leave, then there is a problem. Sometimes, showing the staff you care is enough to maintain their loyalty. Below are four simple signs to keep in mind.
Small Talk
Plenty of bosses like to act as if they are above their workforce. They don’t call them subordinates for anything in their eyes. To a degree, managers and employees can’t be friends because of the dynamic. Still, there is no reason to be a jackass and alienate them further. Instead, speak to them about the little things in their life. Some of the greatest bosses know the names of all their employees and their family too. Engaging in a conversation about their life is a sign you’re not self-absorbed. You are interested in their life also.
Medical Equipment
The law states that businesses must have a person trained in first aid in case of an emergency. However, there isn’t much more to it than basic response tactics. As an accountant, the job is to keep them alive until the professionals arrive. Regardless, it’s amazing the impact hospital carts can have on people around the office. They see them and think “they seem advanced,” and “we must be in good hands.” Subconsciously, workers also understand that the company is going the extra mile for their well-being. You don’t have to, but it’s well worth considering.
Telephone Exchanges
Okay, so there aren’t many exchanges via a telephone anymore what with messaging software. Still, the motto is the same: you have their back. Clients aren’t great all of the time and they will mistreat your workers. They feel as if they have the right to because they “pay their wages.” Plus, they understand the dynamic. It’s never nice to fire a client but it may be necessary in some cases. For one thing, it sends a clear message that you protect your people. Hopefully, this will encourage them to be loyal and work twice as hard.
Practical Targets
Getting the most from the team is essential. On the flip side, they have lives and want to spend time at home. Quality bosses understand they aren’t pack mules and need a break from the office. Therefore, they set challenging yet realistic goals which people can hit during regular office hours. To workers, this shows them that you think enough about their skills to be able to smash tight deadlines. Also, it demonstrates a softer side, an implication that you don’t want them to work too hard.
Once you show a person how much you value them, there is nothing they can’t achieve.
